Utilising a small sloping site bounding the existing science block and sports pitches, the Lang Centre comprises three floors of sixth form teaching and social space along with a further floor with science labs and food tech classrooms.
The new floors were linked to the existing science block where re-organisation works were carried out to improve the facilities. A new entrance lobby was also incorporated to the existing science block to create a unified entity.
The perimeter wall to the existing Science Block was underpinned to allow for the excavation of the new semi-basement alongside. The new extension comprised mass concrete pad foundations, watertight concrete basement with reinforced concrete frame to third floor and steel framed and clad top storey.
Transfer beams were introduced at ground floor to provide an open column free space in the sixth form social area.
Carefully designed details allowed for a projecting façade with brickwork wrapping around the soffit.
The SUDS drainage design includes areas of permeable landscaping and soakaways.
