Historic Walls at Chartwell

The walls to the Kitchen Garden at Chartwell were substantially built by Winston Churchill himself between 1925 and 1932.  The brick and tile-capped walls were constructed significantly higher, and too slender for the thickness for modern standards and suffered from differential settlement resulting in significant lean.

ACA developed a proposal which was fully supported by Historic England for stabilising the walls in-situ without changing the external appearance and which remained in line with good conservation practise.

The North Wall was completed in 2019 and the East Wall works are planned for 2020.
