ACA assisted architects MKA in the design of this spectacular extension in difficult ground conditions dominated by shrinkable clay, high water table and nearby mature trees. The level deck pool is housed by a single storey hall with movable glazing on 2 sides with no corner post. The roof is unsupported above an opening 12m long by 6m deep. The pool has windows into the basement gym reached by a folded timber stair with integral glass balustrade. Photograph 8 above shows architect Joe Martin's concept and photograph 10 the realisation. The masonry was laid using traditional lime putty mortar without unsightly expansion joints.
